The Duesenberg is a classic automobile that many car enthusiasts will likely have heard of. The Duesenberg was manufactured in Indiana as primarily a luxury car. The name became well known after the company began to produce some very impressive roadsters, many of which are still in demand by collectors today. Similar to a few other auto makers, this company was started by two brothers. August and Fred Duesenberg launched the company in 1913. Their goal was to build sports cars, something they believed would be a successful product in the automotive market at the time.

The brothers did not have any kind of formal training. Instead, they were self taught and spent a lot of time experimenting with auto designs as they tried to come up with some truly unique. Every car that the Duesenberg brothers built was crafted entirely by hand. They were actually thought to be among the very best in car quality and they achieved a substantial amount of success with their creations. It was not long before they became involved in the racing scene, like many of their automotive competitors.

The Duesenberg Company made the move to Indianapolis in 1921 where they got to work designing a new type of passenger vehicle. The first model that they produced did not sell all that well at all. The failure was significant and they had to re-evaluate their business plan. The company was purchased by E.L. Cord in 1926. He wanted to take full advantage of the amazing skills that the brothers possessed. He believed that they could literally produce the very best engine in the world. They set to work on a vehicle called the Model J and it debuted in 1928.

It didn’t take long for the Duesenberg to rise to fame and find plenty of success for the brothers. The Duesenberg came to be known as one of the best in luxury cars. It wasn’t long before celebrities like Clark Gable were driving a Duesenberg and openly admitting that he truly loved it. Throughout both Europe as well as America, this car brand was very successful and popular as a status symbol. The cars continued to go through many changes and evolved as the brothers continued to do all that they could to make the Duesenberg even better than it had been before.

Changes were made to both the body and the engine of the Duesenberg. Additional horsepower and style made it even more appealing to those interested in this type of luxury vehicle. Unfortunately World War II led to the downfall of many auto makers and Duesenberg was one of them. They made many attempts to reinstate their former success but that was not to be. This car make never did survive beyond that point but the Duesenberg remains a classic car that is incredibly rare and potentially worth a lot of money. There are not many of these cars around anymore. Any Duesenberg owners should do all they can to make sure it is maintained. Putting it in a museum is also a great option to keep it safe.
